Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is an academic unit dedicated to the systematic examination of the oral cavity and surrounding structures. It involves the interpretation of all physiological and pathological changes in these structures using clinical, radiographic, histopathological, or biochemical findings when necessary, as well as planning the required treatments.

Fields of Study in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology

  • Diseases of the teeth and gums
  • Jawbones and temporomandibular joint
  • Soft tissues of the head and neck region
  • Oral diseases related to systemic conditions
  • Physics and biology of radiation
  • Digital radiography

Our department operates in two separate clinics: Oral Diagnosis and Radiology.

Oral Diagnosis Clinic

The initial examination of patients applying to our faculty is conducted in the Oral Diagnosis Clinic. Accurate diagnosis is essential for providing adequate and proper treatment. Therefore, in this clinic, not only are the primary complaints of the patients evaluated, but also a complete head, neck, and oral cavity examination is performed.

Radiology Clinic

Following the examinations in the Oral Diagnosis Clinic, intraoral or extraoral radiographs deemed necessary for diagnosis are taken in the Radiology Clinic. Diseases are diagnosed based on clinical and radiological findings, and patients are referred to the appropriate clinics for treatment. Radiographic examination supports intraoral findings and sometimes reveals diseases, cysts, and tumors in the jawbones that show no symptoms in the oral cavity.

Today, in addition to dental and jaw radiographs, imaging methods such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ultrasonography (USG) are increasingly used in dental radiology. For these types of advanced radiological evaluations, patients are referred to medical radiology clinics.
